I just have to mention something that occurred earlier today. I'm currently working with my uncle who is in the moving-business. Today we were going to help a student move from his dorm to a proper apartment in another part of town, and his father wanted to help.

So, as I was stacking boxes and whatnot into the elevator at the ground floor of the apartment complex, the guy's father suggests that he do the stacking and I do the unloading on the second floor. I proceeded to the second floor to wait for the elevator to appear, but after waiting for around two minutes the damn thing still hadn't showed up.

I could hear muffled noises coming from downstairs and I thought that the old man had managed to get himself stuck or something, so I rushed down to help. It turns out that he had pressed the button to go to the floor he was already on and had not noticed this, so he had unloaded all the boxes onto the exact same place there were at before!

A failure of the highest calibre indeed!

It's getting harder and harder to work on Colony 42.
One of the reasons is the move to source- it's easier and funner to map for source than GS.
Another is that I don't have a team. There's no coder to give me something cool to implement (not that I need anything but what I have) No other mappers to work on other areas and spur me to best them...
And then there's the tweaking. When I'm stuck on something that I have to tweak endlessly, like running water, I lose the will to map because there's no real progress- just the same rooms, nothing new and interesting to see and test.

tl/dr: JeffMOD complains about "mapper's block"

Ever felt like your friends don't give a damn about you?

It happens to me all the time. I have a couple of friends who say they're my friends, but they seldom remember me if I don't call first. I'm already a background element in everyone's lives. I'm the decorative NPC. I'm the optional quest nobody's interested in.

It could be easy to say that I have nothing to give, but that's not true. I care, I'm always there, they always have my unconditional attention. Yet I don't see any of that come back. I'm always the last option, the oh-well-if-there's-nothing-better. Is it asking too much to expect the same from them?

I know that as a computer geek I shouldn't expect to have a girlfriend, but a friend or two at least? Are my expectations so unrealistic? I'm starting to think they are. Actually wanting my friends to pretend they're friends? Pfft. Who would come up with such a thing.

Example: two days ago, one of them tells me one of his (female) friends wanted to see a movie. She said "Bring a friend, I'm coming with one too". Of course, only a week later I hear of this event. He then adds, "I'm sorry, I have to confess you weren't the first one I thought of". Well, not a surprise for me anyway - I'm never the first one anyone thinks of. Sometimes, not even the last one.

Then there's my other friend, whose friendship, company, support and overall giveashitness I appreciated the most. At one point we didn't go a day without talking in one way or another. But not now. For months already she hasn't written anymore, doesn't call, doesn't text, doesn't reply to emails, doesn't get online (to, say, msn) for weeks. She insists everything is alright, but (due to all the above) I still feel that "I don't care" vibe coming from her. She did call me for my birthday, though. But that's it. Is this all a joke? I just don't understand.

Life is always teasing me. There doesn't seem to be anything in it for me.

TLDR: I'm depressed, I feel worthless and forgotten.

I just updated to Ati Catalyst 10.2 from 9.8

Valve Hammer Editor 3.5 works fine again ( after 3 years).

YAY !

After this I'll wait for other guys to tell me if the following versions of Catalyst will still support Hammer editor :D

Just played The Specialists for the first time, and my god, i was blown away...

I played with bots for about about an hour in random map (the map with the huge hall with the mirrored floor, and all the glass doors/windows you break to continue from area to area) and my god i had a blast familiarizing myself with the controls and all the powerups. I LOVE all the weapons... SUCH an improvement from the original HL weapons.... (on that note, i think A LOT more people would play HLDM if the weapons look/feel/behaviour were upgraded a little bit.. i HATE the original HL weapons..)

Then, i went to a server and got my ass handed to me as one would expect, but still had a great time playing the "the lobby", perfectly recreated from the The Matrix.

kinda sad to only see a few active servers left for such a great game, but at least there still are some... I'm so sad i didn't start playing this game sooner...

Have you ever considered the possibility of replacing fossil fuels with more exotic sollutions?

So, I'm back from holidays, and I picked myself up a much needed harddrive for my laptop that is currently choking on the amount of data on it. So I have gracefully given my laptop a Western Digital 1 Terrabyte External Drive for $148 AUD.

Also, blog update: http://hlifehotdog.fortunecity.com/blog/

'Fixed' my computer today. Problem > not 100% sure but it may have been from overclocking. The only thing that I saw that was weird was that it had been running fine for well over 2 weeks. Just happened today where the comp would sort of boot up and then try to boot from ExpressGate (yet I disabled it some long time ago).

The fix was resetting the BIOS values (taking out the battery and putting it back in). *Sigh*

Join this group and I'll make you an officer.
http://steamcommunity.com/groups/TWHL_HLDM
Other officers can also appoint new officers after a few of you join.
I see a lot of people try to organize HLDM in the shout box, and it's not very effective.
Everyone from TWHL in this group should be an officer, ergo everyone in this group will be able to schedule HLDM matches.
Don't expect everyone to show up for every match. This is just an easier way to ensure that everyone knows there will be a match soon.

And don't be fuckheads with your officer shit. Don't post gay porn in the news, don't fuck with match schedules that others and set up, and don't just kick people out of the group for shits and giggles or I'm deleting the thing all together.

When you're promoted, you can appoint new officers through the "manage group members" tab under "Admin options"

I've been re-playing Red Alert and a few other somewhat aged games recently.
Replaying older games makes you remember the simplicity most of them had back then. Whether that's a good thing or not differs between games, but sometimes it's good just to play something that you don't need to think about as much.

Another car rear-ended me this morning.

It was entirely the other driver's fault, and he was driving without a license or insurance.

Of course I called the police on that bastard.

I'm writing this from the Internet Cafe' I have gone to for many years now. And in doing so, I can download everything I want. So I am now downloading:

Battlefield 2
Serious Sam HD
Phyconauts
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl

LOLWUT? I opened up Max and made a little something and tried to export it to a Halflife SMD file, only the option wasn't there. I made sure the plugins were installed and even installed them again. No luck. Even worse, I can't import SMD files either. What gives? I can't model for HL anymore?

I would like to take a moment to write about a certain type of person that really bothers me.
A type of person that I, for lack of a better term that doesn't involve copious amounts of swearing, call idiots.
History has been plauged by these people; Hitler, the KKK, a suprisingly large amount of people in my school. They, suprisingly, have a thought process. It goes like this:
This person is different > I don't like this person > Since I don't like them, they're inferior > Since they're inferior, I can do whatever I want to them.
Frankly, I'm tired of dealing with them, tired of hearing about things they've done, and it has to stop.
In the event of alien contact, how will we be able to deal with it, when we can't even get along with others in our race? If someone with a different nationality, skin colour, customs, or way of thinking can't be treated with an equal amount of respect, how could we possibly do that with an entirely different species from another planet/dimension?

Yes, it's more of a sore spot for me, because I'm one of the "different people", being a computer nerd in a school populated by computer illiterate people. But it's a valid problem, and one humanity had better sort out soon, or nothing will improve for us.

Thanks for your time.

Inspired by the cool last journal post, I just couldn't help myself to use that piece of JavaScript.

Before you see the image: I apologize for any inconvenient modifications, the image should be treated as a joke.

So neat bit of javascript code here.
Enter this in the toolbar, and the whole site you're on becomes "editable" to a point. It's client-side, so don't expect to change anything and save it.

"JavaScript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0"

Sorry ahead of time Rimmy.

So,

I had my first day of Uni today. I'm studying Civil Engineering, and am already starting to stress.

My maths subject sounds impossibly difficult, and the many assignments for my other subjects will take alot of time and higher order thinking - things not required in high school.

Oral presentations are going to be prevalent - one of my weak points is public speaking, so now I'm stressing even more.

People keep mentioning MatLab, SolidWorks and PebblePad, is anyone familiar with those particular programs?

I found myself falling asleep in my 2 hour long Engineering Materials lecture, as the chemistry he was explaining turned into crazy theorems and concepts which completely lost me.

My subjects include: Mathematical Methods for Engineers 1, Sustainable Engineering Practice, Engineering Materials and Computer Techniques.

Tomorrow I'm off to get my textbooks, configure my laptop to work with the university's wireless network, and spend 3 straight hours in maths lectures and practicals. Oh joy.

Well there you have it, folks! What do you guys have to say. Anyone else completed/completing/wanting to complete an Engineering Degree? Anyone in the same or similar situation as me, or have been? Anyone got any advice?

avatar hlife_hotdog 4 comments | 28th February 2010, 22:57 PM

I'm on holiday for the next week. I'll still have my laptop and the internet (thankyou wireless broadband) but I'll be with my fiance' so not only will she want to use it, but if she's not using it then she'll want my attention. I can't win.

But whatever, i'll be logging onto the net at my favorite Internet Cafe who upgraded to the fastest broadband he could get his hands on, 8mb/s. So I'll get to download all the games i bought on Steam but couldn't download their huge size without wasting my monthly limit.

So cheers, and don't forget my blog, I'm actually enjoying it...

I saw 3 bands LIVE last night. They are ROCK bands to let you know. Downtown Brown is comical rock. Seasons of Eden is almost metal. Half-Light is soft rock.

Half-Light - (heh, yeah that's their real name) they weren't too bad but they didn't play the kind of music that I really liked.

Downtown Brown - (my cousin's old band) These guys put on an amazing live show. they are fucking hilarious. The guitar player can really play good and fast. If they ever come to your area, you NEED to see them live.

Seasons of Eden - My cousin's new band. Sounds amazing, the singer was great. My cousin really slapped da bass last night. :) The guitar player also had amazing solos and everything.

Didn't get home until 5:00 AM. Now, that was a party.

I went hunting with my pal Mike today. We had a pretty good time.
First, we gathered up all the equipment we needed. It wasn't much, but we almost ran out of ammo by the time the day was done.

We found a nice spot to wait for something to come along, and Mike decided he wanted his picture taken with everything.

We got a few small things, but eventually managed to bag this bad boy:

Bugger took almost all the ammo we had to bring down, but it was worth it.
It was good day.

Dear all at TWHL,

I just took a shit so big that the thought of death ran through my mind whilst I was sitting on the toilet, I swear my entire life flashed before my eyes.

I'm now typing this with two folded pieces of toilet paper blocking my profusely bleeding ass.

Yours sincerely,
Wounded Livewire.

P.S - Will understand if a girl ever tells me she doesn't want anal sex from now on.

It's amazing how a map can evolve.
cs_trepidation, for example, began as a coop project by myself and Urby under the working title "ss_pijamas."
The "ss" stood for Silent Strike which was an experimental gamemode we discovered quite by chance in which players only have 15hp, and CTs are limited to silent weapons and are outnumbered by terrorists to a ratio of around 3:1. It proved to be exceptionally fun, but these sort of things tend to be a love or hate deal - so it was changed back to regular ol' CS.

This map has been featured in several Scotch and Coffee videos, and contains the SnC offices.

There are tens of easter eggs and secret areas, a proper radar with nav locations and more custom materials than you can shake a stick at.

Enjoy.

P.S. Urby's office was made by him. That is all. So much for "coop" the lazy bastard ;D

Today is my 22nd birthday, if anyone cares.

Last night I had a dream in which I was Harry Potter. I was running around in a crazy maze with secret passages and stuff like that in a sort of team deathmatch HL - but with magic wands, and the teams were the Hogwarts houses. I remember thinking it was super cool and I had to make a map of that to put up here. Then I woke up and sadly, I realised it was a pretty shitty idea for a map.

I'm writing this journal from my school, in my informatics classroom. From the teacher's desk :D

We have a new teacher this semester, it's her first year in informatics( she was originalyl a mathematics teacher). And because I'm usually the best at informatics in my class, I'm like a secondary professor in my classroom.
It's pretty cool. It's a wounderful relaxing time for me :D
All I have to do is write some simple problems for my collegues at the blackboard and then I can sit at the teacher's desk computer. It has the fastest internet speed from the class.

It seems I'll have an easy life at school for the coming years.... :)
